Tema Oil Refinery Roars Back to Life After Prolonged Shutdown.

BOSTenergies has confirmed the successful resumption of crude oil refining operations at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), marking a significant milestone for Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector. The refinery had been shut down for over six years, and its restart is expected to boost energy security, industrial growth, and national development.

The refinery’s Acting Managing Director, Edmond Kombat, stated that TOR is transitioning towards “complete refining operations” after years of intermittent activity and underutilization. The company has implemented a bold strategy focused on restoring core refining operations and maximizing existing assets to enhance efficiency, productivity, and profitability.

The resumption of operations is expected to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products, saving the country an estimated $400 million monthly. TOR aims to process up to 60% of the country’s crude oil needs, meeting between 45% and 60% of domestic demand.

The refinery’s revival has implications for employment, skills development, and local content, supporting a wide ecosystem of contractors, service providers, and skilled professionals. BOSTenergies commended TOR’s leadership, technical teams, and partners for their dedication and resilience in making the restart possible.

The successful restart of TOR is a significant step towards realizing Ghana’s national objectives, including energy security and value addition within the petroleum sector. The company plans to further strengthen its operations, exploring new prospects and markets for TOR’s products.
