Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama has appointed Second Deputy Governor Matilda Asante Asiedu as his authorised representative on the Board of the Ghana Gold Board in Accra to replace him.
The appointment follows the Governor disclosure that he resigned from the GoldBod board about 5 months ago due to potential conflict of interest concerns. He said he no longer participates in board meetings. The move seeks to preserve regulatory independence.
Matilda Asante Asiedu who serves as Second Deputy Governor will now represent Bank of Ghana interest on the GoldBod board. According to the Bank of Ghana, the appointment ensures continued collaboration between the central bank and GoldBod on gold trade and forex retention while avoiding direct governorship conflict.
GoldBod is mandated under the Minerals and Mining Act to regulate gold buying, assaying and export to maximise national returns. Bank of Ghana monitors repatriation of gold proceeds to support cedi stability and reserves. The law allows the Governor to delegate representation to a deputy where governance concerns arise.
The new arrangement is expected to strengthen coordination on gold for reserves programme and anti smuggling efforts. Industry watchers say having a deputy on the board balances oversight with independence. The central bank maintains its core mandate of price stability and financial regulation.
