Member of Parliament for Ketu North Eric Edem Agbana has said Ghana Education Service is increasingly becoming a source of dissatisfaction for government in Accra over its handling of teacher welfare and administrative processes.
The MP said delays in processing promotions, poor communication and unresolved conditions of service issues have frustrated teachers and put pressure on government. He said GES must be more efficient and transparent. His remarks come as teacher unions meet government to resolve strike.
According to Eric Edem Agbana, the current situation where Controller and Accountant General Department says it paid all submitted promotion cases while many teachers still wait shows gaps in GES submission system. He said government cannot be blamed when required documents are not forwarded.
Ghana Education Service manages pre tertiary education and implements policies for over 300000 teachers. Under the Education Act, GES handles postings, promotions and discipline but relies on CAGD for payroll. Recent years have seen tensions over upgrade delays and allowance payments.
Agbana called for reforms in GES to improve data management and timely processing. He said government wants a motivated teacher workforce to drive learning outcomes. He urged leadership of GES to fix internal bottlenecks and rebuild trust with teachers.
