
President John Dramani Mahama has removed Yaw Ampofo Ankrah from his position as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect, and appointed Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong as the Acting Director-General.
The decision, finalized following a high-level meeting at Jubilee House on Thursday, October 1, 2026, brings an abrupt end to Ankrah’s 18-month tenure at the sports governing body amid the World Cup visa facilitation controversy.
Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s removal follows his suspension linked to alleged irregularities in the facilitation of visas for the World Cup. The controversy had generated public debate about accountability at the NSA.
Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been officially appointed as the Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority. His appointment, confirmed on October 1, 2026, takes immediate effect as the government seeks to restore confidence in the authority.
Prof. Sarpong is expected to bring academic and administrative experience to stabilize the NSA and oversee ongoing reforms. The Authority manages national sporting facilities and coordinates sports development across Ghana.
President Mahama, according to Metro TV, is committed to ensuring transparency and efficiency in sports administration. Further directives regarding the NSA leadership structure are expected from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in the coming days.
