President John Dramani Mahama has invited the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), leadership of the striking teacher unions and six other institutions to a crucial meeting tomorrow, October 2, to discuss the teachers’ demands and find an immediate roadmap to end the nationwide strike.
The meeting scheduled at the Jubilee House will bring together GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT Ghana, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Controller and Accountant General’s Department, Ministry of Labour and other stakeholders. Government sources say President Mahama wants concrete evidence of payment, not promises.

The teacher unions declared a nationwide strike on September 25, 2026, over unpaid promotion arrears, stalled Collective Agreement negotiations and non-implementation of the 20 percent Deprived Area Allowance. They insist salaries and arrears must reflect on payslips before they return to classrooms.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu had earlier assured unions that data had been submitted to the Controller to place over 80,000 teachers who passed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026 on their correct scales. However, unions rejected the assurances, saying bank alerts are the only proof.

Parents and students across basic and senior high schools are feeling the impact of the strike. GES has directed district directors to submit clean data by 4pm today while the Ministry says it is engaging Fair Wages to clear arrears. A communique is expected after tomorrow’s session at the Presidency.
The Presidency has asked all invited institutions to come with validated payroll data and implementation timelines. The teacher unions say they will only call off the strike when they see payslips and bank credits.
