Ghana, China Ink Deal for Damongo University Construction

Ghana and China have signed a significant US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo, Savannah Region, marking a major boost to the country’s education sector. The agreement was signed between Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and China’s outgoing Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa.
According to GhanaWeb, the university is expected to expand access to tertiary education in the historically underserved Savannah Region, serving as a catalyst for regional development and skills training. The project aligns with Ghana’s development agenda and strengthens the country’s longstanding relationship with China, dating back to the era of former President Kwame Nkrumah and Chairman Mao.
Dr. Forson expressed appreciation to Ambassador Tong for his role in strengthening Ghana-China relations, highlighting the successful conclusion of two major grant agreements, including the Damongo university project and a multipurpose market in Aflao. The Finance Minister emphasized the need to deepen economic cooperation, exploring trade settlements in Ghanaian cedi and Chinese yuan to reduce exchange losses.
Ambassador Tong praised Ghana’s improving economic performance and expressed pride in the state of Ghana-China relations, citing tangible outcomes in development cooperation. The university project is expected to attract students, researchers, and investments, contributing to the region’s growth.
The agreement is part of China’s continued support for Ghana’s development, with bilateral trade reaching US$11.8 billion in 2024, representing a 7.1% increase from the previous year. Ghana is also set to benefit from China’s zero-tariff policy, enhancing trade relations between the two nations.
The construction of the university is anticipated to have a significant impact on the local community, providing access to quality education and contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
