Adutwum’s Bold Pledge: Free University Education and Business Boost

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, NPP flagbearer aspirant, made a significant promise during his campaign tour to the Ho Central Constituency on January 16, 2026. He vowed to make university education free for all Ghanaians, starting with public universities and prioritizing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs.

According to Adutwum, the initiative will be funded through efficient resource allocation, improved revenue mobilization, and partnerships with the private sector. “I’ll make available free grants for you all for your businesses. My aim is poverty elimination, not eradication,” Adutwum declared, emphasizing his commitment to transforming Ghana’s economy. He explained that poverty elimination means creating an environment where people can sustain themselves, rather than just providing temporary relief.

Adutwum’s vision includes providing free university education, with district assemblies allocating part of their common fund to build hostels across the country where universities are located. “In the same vein, we shall have free university education in Ghana,” he stated. He also plans to establish two-year community colleges to equip Ghanaians with practical and employable skills. “I’ll build 2-year community colleges to imbibe practical and employable and sellable skills across the country,” he said.

Furthermore, Adutwum proposed renaming the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to the Ministry of Economic Transformation and Finance, emphasizing the need for economic transformation. “We have an economic management team. What economy have you created to transform? We need an economic transformation team. After we transform, then we manage. Any economy that does not allow people to reach middle-class status is not an economy,” Adutwum quizzed, underscoring his vision for Ghana’s economic future.

The free grants for businesses, Adutwum explained, will empower entrepreneurs and small business owners, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. This, coupled with his education and economic transformation agenda, aims to position Ghana as a knowledge-based economy that can compete globally.

Adutwum’s campaign focuses on education reform and economic development, leveraging his experience as former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe. The outcome of the NPP flagbearer election, scheduled for January 31, is eagerly awaited, with implications for Ghana’s future.
