GIS Cracks Down on Street Begging Networks

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has rescued 305 West African nationals, including 113 children, in a second-phase intelligence-led operation targeting exploitative street begging networks in the Greater Accra Region. According to #UTVGhana, the operation was conducted in key locations such as Abossey Okai, Zongo Junction, Nima, Madina, and Kaneshie.

The exercise forms part of sustained efforts to dismantle organized networks exploiting vulnerable migrants, particularly women and children, for street begging. Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Maud Anima Quainoo stated that the operation builds on an earlier phase, with improved coordination and targeted strategies aimed at dismantling trafficking networks.

The rescued individuals, comprising 36 boys, 77 girls, 66 adult women, and 126 adult men, are currently undergoing profiling and immigration processing at a designated center. Authorities are working with relevant stakeholders to ensure victims, especially children, receive necessary care and protection.

The GIS has urged the public to support ongoing efforts by reporting suspected cases of human trafficking and related offenses. The operation highlights the Service’s commitment to combating human trafficking, protecting vulnerable migrants, and promoting lawful migration practices.

The high number of minors involved underscores growing concerns about child exploitation within such networks. The GIS is intensifying its nationwide campaign to protect vulnerable populations and disrupt exploitative networks.
