President John Dramani Mahama paid homage to Marcus Garvey during his State Visit to Jamaica, laying a floral wreath at the National Heroes Circle to commemorate one of Pan-Africanism’s most formidable architects. The gesture underscored the enduring ideological and cultural bonds between Ghana and Jamaica, and reaffirmed a shared commitment to the ideals of Black self-determination.
The solemn ceremony took place as part of the President’s official engagements in Kingston. Surrounded by government officials and dignitaries, Mr. Mahama placed the wreath at the monument dedicated to Garvey, reflecting on the Jamaican-born leader’s indelible imprint on anti-colonial thought and the global African liberation movement.
According to Jubilee House, the tribute was deliberate and symbolic. The President observed that Garvey’s articulation of race pride, economic independence, and continental unity continues to resonate across generations. He noted that the connection between Accra and Kingston is not merely diplomatic, but rooted in a common historical trajectory of resistance, resilience, and reinvention.
Garvey, who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, galvanized millions in the early twentieth century with his doctrine of African redemption and repatriation. His philosophy profoundly influenced Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and remains a reference point in contemporary discourses on reparatory justice and diaspora engagement. The wreath-laying thus served as both remembrance and renewal of that intellectual lineage.
The act also carries contemporary diplomatic weight. As Ghana positions itself to deepen ties with the Caribbean under the African Union’s agenda, invoking Garvey’s legacy provides a moral and historical framework for cooperation on trade, culture, and citizenship.
