Supreme Court Marks 150 Years with Renewed Pledge

Ghana’s Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has called for a renewed commitment to improving the justice system as the Supreme Court marks its 150th anniversary. Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the milestone, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized the need for a faster, more accessible, and transparent justice system.

According to #GhanaNews, the Chief Justice stressed that the anniversary should not only celebrate the court’s long history but also inspire reflection and meaningful reform. He highlighted persistent challenges such as court congestion, manual systems, and inequalities driven by cost, time, and location.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie urged stakeholders to prioritize building a justice system that serves ordinary citizens, saying, “History will not judge us by how long the court has existed, but by what we did with the moment entrusted to us.” He acknowledged progress made in recent years, including efforts to improve efficiency and adopt technology.

The Supreme Court’s 150th anniversary is being observed under the theme “Honouring the past, celebrating the present, and defining the future.” The event is part of a broader programme marking 150 years of judicial service in Ghana, highlighting both its historical journey and ongoing efforts at justice reform.

The Chief Justice paid tribute to pioneering judges who built the institution, saying their legacy should inspire current and future judicial officers to strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
