Mahama Launches Landmark Free Primary Healthcare

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s Free Primary Healthcare Programme, a transformative initiative aimed at advancing universal access to quality and affordable healthcare. According to #GhanaNews, the programme aligns with global efforts toward universal health coverage, ensuring every citizen can access essential care without financial burden.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama emphasized the importance of prevention, early detection, and timely treatment of illnesses. He announced that every Ghanaian is expected to undergo at least one health screening annually to strengthen preventive healthcare and improve national health outcomes.

The programme will establish over 350 container-based service delivery points in high-traffic areas, bringing basic healthcare services closer to the public. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh explained that the initiative will cover routine screenings, antenatal and postnatal care, immunisations, and treatment for common illnesses.

The programme is designed to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), rather than replace it. President Mahama urged citizens to continue using their NHIS cards, especially for higher-level care. The initiative is expected to cost GH¢1.2 billion annually and will begin in 150 underserved districts across the country.

The launch marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey toward achieving universal health coverage. The government is deploying health volunteers and establishing mobile clinics to reach remote communities.
