Fatal Accidents
Hundreds of aggrieved residents including cummuters in Battor and Aveyime in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region on Saturday July 4, 2026 have taken to the streets to protest against dangerous potholes on the Aveyime-Manya stretch of the Sege-Battor-Aveyime-Mepe road, which have led to a surge in traffic accidents.
The complained bitterly the deep, hazardous potholes along the Battor-Aveyime-Mepe road network are causing frequent accidents and tragic loss of life.
Frustrated by the lack of action, demonstrators have blocked heavy sand trucks from plying the route.
Aggrieved locals blame heavily loaded sand trucks for deteriorating the road conditions, creating severe and dangerous potholes.
Roadblocks
Protesters used rocks to block the road from Aveyime through the Rich Farm area, near the private residence of the North Tongu Member of Parliament, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Wikipedia.
This action caused severe vehicular traffic jams.
Ignored Appeals
The demonstrators previously appealed to the Feeder Roads department of the Ghana Highway Authority to fix the road, but their requests were ignored.
Assembly Accusations
Protesters criticized the North Tongu District Assembly for failing to repair the road, despite collecting levies from the tipper truck operators who offload sand in the Mepe and Battor enclaves.
