“Democracy Under Attack” Demo Looms
The NPP Youth Wing is calling for a mass demonstration in Accra, alleging widespread attacks on Constitutional governance under the Mahama Administration
The Youth Wing of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a demonstration in Accra on Thursday, August 6, alleging what it describes as a sustained erosion of constitutional governance and democratic freedoms under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama. In a Facebook post published on Sunday, August 2, accompanied by artwork bearing the inscription “Democracy Under Attack Demo” and the hashtags #SaveGhanaNow and #SayNoToStateCapture, the youth group called on Ghanaians to participate in the protest to “protect the country’s democracy.”
The group alleged that the government had weakened several pillars of constitutional governance and listed what it described as a pattern of actions that threaten democratic institutions and the rule of law. Among its claims, the NPP Youth Wing accused the government of interfering in the judiciary, selectively applying justice, targeting political opponents while allegedly shielding members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) from prosecution, and using state institutions to harass opposition figures.
The statement also criticised the government’s efforts to reintroduce the public tribunal system, describing the move as rushed and intended to intimidate political opponents. It further alleged the suppression and criminalisation of free speech, the imposition of what it called repressive baial conditions on opposition members, and claimed that President Mahama was pursuing a “veiled third-term agenda.”
According to the group, these developments collectively represent an attack on Ghana’s democratic values and constitutional order. “Without doubt, our democracy is under attack and all well-meaning Ghanaians must rise to defend it,” the statement said.
The Youth Wing urged citizens from across the country to join the planned demonstration, describing the protest as a civic effort to safeguard democratic governance and prevent what it termed “state capture.” The demonstration is expected to take place on the streets of Accra on Thursday, August 6.
