An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed, while another is in critical condition following an explosion involving a motor tricycle transporting suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, along an unapproved route in the area. Information gathered from security sources in Hamile indicates that the explosion also killed the civilians transporting the suspected explosives on the motor tricycle.
The civilians were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint. Preliminary accounts indicate that the motor tricycle was travelling along an unauthorised route when security personnel attempted to intercept it.
The occupants allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop, prompting a pursuit that ended in the explosion. The blast caught the pursuing personnel, killing one Immigration officer and leaving another critically injured.
The injured officer is said to be in a serious condition, although further details about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where the officer is receiving treatment are not yet available. Hamile, a border community in the Upper West Region near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso, is an important transit point where security agencies conduct surveillance to prevent unauthorised movements and cross-border threats.
