“We’ll ensure lawful evacuation of Fulani herdsmen” – Daniel Dagba
Monome-Dzrakate, Volta Region – Residents and community leaders in the Monome-Dzrakate Electoral Area of the Akatsi South Municipality have formally petitioned the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Chairman of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), demanding the immediate evacuation of what they describe as nomadic Fulani herdsmen and their cattle from the area.
The petition, dated June 30, 2026, was presented following a peaceful demonstration by residents who expressed growing concern over what they claim is the prolonged occupation of their community by the herdsmen despite previous directives for them to vacate the area.
According to the petition, signed by Hon. Neyram Satsi, Assembly Member for the Monome-Dzrakate Electoral Area and Lead Convener of the demonstration, repeated community engagements, consultations, and notices issued over the years have failed to resolve the issue.
The petition alleges that the continued presence of the herdsmen has resulted in widespread destruction of farmlands, environmental degradation, insecurity, and threats to the livelihoods of residents.
Clearly stated in the petition are allegations of farmland destructions, concerns over water pollution and security highlighting that some farmers particularly women have been harassed, intimidated and physically assaulted in attempts to access their farms. These they fear could trigger food insecurity in the area as farming is the primary source of livelihood for residents.
The petition further warns that tensions within the community have reached alarming levels, creating what residents describe as an imminent risk of a breakdown in law and order if urgent action is not taken.
Residents Demand Immediate enforcement of an operation by MUSEC to remove all herdsmen and their cattle from the community and establish security patrols with a permanent presence along the boundaries of the area. Residents however reserved the right to pursue all lawful means to protect lives, livelihoods, properties and ancestral lands should no concrete action be taken within the stipulated period.
The residents undoubtedly expressed complete confidence in the Dagba administration “We trust in your leadership and urge you to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves,” the petition concludes.
Speaking in an interview with Howedey.com, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) acknowledged that the concerns raised by residents in the petition are legitimate and deserve urgent attention. He assured the community that his administration would work closely with the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and other relevant security agencies to address the matter within the confines of the law.
“The concerns contained in the petition are very genuine and well-founded. These Fulani herdsmen reside illegally in our community and as an administration, we will do everything possible within the framework of the law to ensure that the nomadic Fulani herdsmen and their cattle vacate the community within the stipulated timeline,” the DCE stated.
He further emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the municipality while ensuring that all actions taken comply with due process and existing legal provisions.
