AFRAM PLAINS — Eric Blankson, a 34-year-old storekeeper at the Amankwa Fisheries Agriculture Technical Institute, was found dead inside his locked room in Maame Krobo following a robbery that occurred during a blackout on Wednesday, 16th July, 2026.
The incident has deepened fears over security in the Afram Plains North District, where residents say darkness and isolation continue to embolden criminals.
According to Blankson’s brother, who was an eyewitness, the deceased was discovered in his room which had been locked from the outside with a padlock. His sandals were left at the entrance. The brother told investigators that heavy rains had triggered a power outage in the area, and it was during that blackout that armed assailants allegedly made away with GHS 30,000.00.
Police have since conveyed the body to a morgue for autopsy and are treating the case as suspected homicide and robbery. Forensic teams have been deployed to lift prints and examine the padlock and door for evidence. A manhunt has also been launched for the perpetrators.
Officials at AFATI described Blankson as a diligent and trusted staff member responsible for stores and inventory. “He was quiet, hardworking, and committed to the institute,” a colleague said. “We are devastated by how he was taken from us.” The institute has announced a brief suspension of activities in mourning.
The killing adds to growing calls for improved security infrastructure in rural institutions. Stakeholders are urging authorities to install solar lighting, emergency communication lines, and regular patrols in farming and technical communities where cash transactions and limited access make residents vulnerable.
As investigations continue, the family and the AFATI community are demanding swift justice and systemic measures to prevent a recurrence.
