New Pantou Schedule Announced For Afram Plains Route
Residents, traders and commuters along the Kpando Torkor–Agordeke–Donkorkrom corridor now have a formalized travel timetable, following a public announcement by the Kwahu Afram Plains North District Chief Executive, Hon. Kate Mawusi Babanawo. The directive seeks to streamline movement on the vital waterway and reduce uncertainty for market days.
According to a major news report, the DCE disclosed that the pantou will operate on a structured weekly schedule effective immediately. Every Friday evening, after concluding operations at Agordeke, the vessel will return to Kpando Torkor. On Saturdays, the first departure from Kpando Torkor is set for the morning, conveying traders and passengers to Agordeke and onward to Donkorkrom. The return leg will commence in the afternoon, transporting commuters back to Kpando Torkor.
According to obky transport stakeholders, predictable scheduling is critical for the agrarian and trading communities that depend on the route for economic survival. The Kpando Torkor–Agordeke–Donkorkrom axis serves as a lifeline for the distribution of foodstuffs, fish and other commodities across the Afram Plains. Erratic departures have historically resulted in losses, missed market opportunities and prolonged transit times for vulnerable passengers.
The announcement also contained a public advisory urging travelers to arrive at boarding points ahead of departure to ensure orderly embarkation and timely movement. District officials emphasized that adherence to the timetable will enhance efficiency, improve safety compliance and allow for better coordination with market activities in Agordeke and Donkorkrom.
The pantou remains the principal mode of conveyance for thousands who navigate the Volta Lake basin where road infrastructure is limited. Successive administrations have grappled with the challenge of maintaining reliable ferry services in the area, often contending with fuel costs, vessel maintenance and fluctuating passenger volumes. A codified schedule represents an attempt to institutionalize service delivery and restore public confidence.
With the new arrangement now in force, attention will shift to implementation and monitoring. For the people of Kwahu Afram Plains North, the measure could translate into tangible gains in commerce and mobility, provided operational discipline is sustained.
