Police Arrest 258 Over Violent Adoagyiri Disturbances
Following the disturbing incident in Adoagyiri, the police has arrested 258 suspects.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the National Operations Directorate, has arrested 258 suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that erupted at Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region on July 7, 2026.
The mass arrests followed a coordinated security operation aimed at restoring law and order after the unrest, which reportedly resulted in widespread destruction of public and private property and created fear among residents.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Eastern South Regional Police Command and signed by the Regional Public Affairs Officer, DSP David Fianko-Okyere, preliminary investigations indicate that some of the suspects allegedly engaged in a series of criminal acts during the disturbances.
The Police said the suspects are alleged to have looted shops, set fire to an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer, vandalised the Oko Anawdo Palace, damaged an astro turf facility, and robbed mobile money vendors. The Command noted that the incidents caused widespread panic within the community and disrupted normal economic and social activities.
As part of the operation, security personnel also recovered two locally manufactured firearms, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, suspected tramadol and Viagra tablets, as well as several mobile phones believed to be relevant to ongoing investigations. The Police however said all 258 suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with investigations to establish their individual roles in the disturbances and any related criminal offences.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command assured residents that adequate security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order, protect lives and property, and prevent any further disturbances in the area. The Command further appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by volunteering credible information that could assist in the ongoing investigations. Residents were advised to report any relevant information to the nearest Police Station.
In addition, the Police cautioned residents, particularly the youth, to remain law-abiding and refrain from acts capable of undermining public peace and security.
The Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all persons found culpable are dealt with in accordance with the law while working to restore calm and public confidence in the affected communities.
The arrests represent one of the largest security operations undertaken in the area in recent times and outlines the Ghana Police Service’s determination to clamp down on violent crime, protect public safety, and preserve peace and order across the country.
