A devastating mudslide triggered by torrential rains struck the Adaklu-Helekpe community in Ghana’s Volta Region yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement. According to #JamesGunu, Volta Regional Minister, the incident buried at least five houses and nine vehicles, and several residents remain displaced.
Hon. James Gunu, accompanied by Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Member of Parliament, and Hon. Jerry Yao Ameko, District Chief Executive, visited the affected families to express solidarity and support. They also visited injured victims at the Ho Teaching Hospital (Trafalgar), donating GHS 20,000 to assist with medical bills and support other children on admission.
The Regional leadership of NADMO has been engaged to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the affected area, determining the safety of continued habitation and guiding necessary interventions. Hon. Gunu reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, relief, and long-term wellbeing of all affected persons.
The mudslide has left the community in a state of distress, with many residents struggling to cope with the aftermath. The government’s swift response and pledge of support are expected to bring some relief to those affected.
