A senior midwife at Trust Mother and Child Hospital in Osu, Lucinda Naomi Otchere, has been apprehended for her alleged involvement in a child trafficking syndicate. According to #GHOneNews, Otchere, who was in charge of the maternity and labour ward, is accused of facilitating the sale of two children, including a seven-year-old girl and a five-year-old girl, for a total of GH¢55,000.
The police investigation revealed that Otchere paid GH¢20,000 to an accomplice, Janet Larbie, for the seven-year-old girl and later paid an additional GH¢35,000 to transfer the five-year-old girl to a couple in Pokuase. The seven-year-old girl has been rescued, but the five-year-old girl remains missing.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, stated that Otchere’s arrest is part of ongoing investigations into child trafficking activities. The police are working with international partners to dismantle the trafficking network.
The arrest has sparked outrage and concern among the public, with many questioning the safety of children in healthcare facilities. The Ghana Police Service has appealed to anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.
