President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed the United Kingdom’s acknowledgement of the atrocities committed during the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its openness to a formal apology and structured dialogue on reparatory justice.
In a statement, President Mahama, in his capacity as African Union Champion on Reparations, described the development as an important step towards confronting historical injustices and advancing the global reparatory justice agenda.
He called for inclusive, good-faith dialogue involving the African Union, CARICOM, the African diaspora and countries involved in the transatlantic slave trade, emphasising that reparatory justice must encompass a formal apology, restitution of stolen cultural heritage, action against systemic racism and targeted investments in development.
Ghana remains committed to working with its international partners to advance justice, healing, genuine reconciliation and a future free from racism and discrimination.
💬 Howedey Insight: Ghana is now leading the conversation on reparations. A formal apology and real action on heritage and development would mean more than words.
