DVLA Postpones Rollout of New Number Plates

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a delay in the implementation of Ghana’s new vehicle number plate system, originally scheduled for January 2, 2026. The postponement is due to Parliament’s inability to complete amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180) before the Christmas recess.

The new number plates were designed to feature Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips for enhanced vehicle traceability, eliminate the two-digit year code, and introduce zonal and regional identifiers. However, the DVLA needs parliamentary approval to proceed with the rollout.

In the meantime, vehicles with Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV plates can continue to use them until further notice. The DVLA assures the public that a new timeline will be announced once the legislative process is completed.

The Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG) has actually filed an injunction at the High Court in Accra, seeking to restrain the DVLA from rolling out the new number plate system. The case is pending court determination.

The DVLA appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation, urging vehicle owners to continue abiding by existing licensing rules while awaiting further updates on the new system.
