A Teachable Spirit

“The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.” — Proverbs 15:14 ESV

A teachable spirit is a heart that says, “Lord, I want to learn. Correct me. Grow me.” It is humility in action. God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble — James 4:6 ESV. And grace is what makes us grow. Jesus modeled it. Though He was the Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered — Hebrews 5:8 ESV.

If the Master had a teachable heart, how much more do we need one? A teachable spirit welcomes instruction from God’s Word, from godly leadership, from life’s experiences, and even from correction. Pride shuts doors. “A fool despises his father’s instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent” — Proverbs 15:5 ESV. But wisdom listens. “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future” — Proverbs 19:20 ESV.

When you are teachable, God can take you places that talent alone cannot reach. We cannot manufacture humility. We need the Holy Spirit to soften us. “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” — John 16:13 ESV. When you are filled with the Spirit, He makes you sensitive to God’s voice and quick to repent.

He helps you receive feedback without defensiveness and apply it without delay. Stay teachable. Ask questions. Take notes. Receive correction as love. God is still shaping you, and a teachable spirit keeps the clay soft in His hands.

Prayer:
Father, give me a teachable heart. Fill me with Your Spirit and remove pride from me. Help me to listen well, to learn quickly, and to obey immediately. Shape me into the person You’ve called me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
