MTN Slashes Fibre Prices as George Unveils Relief

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced sweeping reductions in MTN fibre broadband tariffs, declaring that entry-level high-speed connectivity will now be accessible to households and enterprises at a fraction of previous rates. The intervention marks a decisive policy thrust to democratize digital access.
According to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, the price of MTN’s 100Mbps fibre broadband package has been slashed from GHS 987 to GHS 299, representing a profound adjustment aimed at bridging the affordability chasm. The Minister disclosed that consumers can now secure 500Mbps Unlimited for GHS 999 and 300Mbps Unlimited for GHS 444, positioning Ghana’s broadband market on a more competitive trajectory. He stated that the recalibration aligns with government’s commitment to digital inclusion and economic productivity.
According to MTN Ghana, the revised tariff architecture follows extensive engagements with the regulator and reflects operational efficiencies achieved through infrastructure expansion and wholesale capacity optimization. The telecommunications giant indicated that the new pricing will accelerate adoption among small businesses, remote workers, and educational institutions. Industry analysts assert that the move will intensify market contestability and compel downstream innovation in service bundling.
Ghana’s broadband penetration has historically been constrained by high retail costs, limited last-mile infrastructure, and uneven urban-rural rollout. According to the National Communications Authority, fibre-to-the-home coverage has expanded steadily, yet uptake lagged due to prohibitive pricing. The current adjustment is viewed as a catalyst for unlocking latent demand, stimulating e-commerce, telemedicine, and virtual learning ecosystems.
The price realignment is expected to reconfigure consumer behavior and exert downward pressure on competing ISPs, while amplifying calls for quality-of-service guarantees. As households reassess data expenditure and enterprises scale cloud operations, the policy shift sets a new benchmark for affordability in West Africa’s accelerating digital economy.
