The victim has been identified as Mr Zebio of Nyagbo Konda. According to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he was inside the Nyagbo Kume Forest on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, picking wild mushrooms when a hunter searching for bushmeat opened fire, believing he had spotted an animal. Police say Mr Zebio died instantly from the gunshot wounds he sustained.
Residents told GNA that entering the Nyagbo Kume Forest to collect mushrooms, snails and other non-timber forest products is a routine livelihood activity for many households, forming part of how families supplement food and income. The incident has therefore unsettled locals who depend on the forest, with some calling for tighter safety measures around hunting activities in the area.
Police have renewed calls for hunters to exercise extreme caution and strictly follow hunting safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies, a caution that echoes recurring concerns about unregulated bush hunting near farming and foraging communities across rural Ghana. The case highlights why clear boundaries are needed between hunting grounds and foraging areas.
