Galamsey Crackdown: NAIMOS Taskforce Seizes Equipment

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Taskforce has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region, dismantling multiple galamsey sites and seizing heavy equipment over the weekend. According to Citi Newsroom, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the menace of galamsey and protect the country’s natural resources.

The taskforce seized several excavators, pumps, and other equipment used in the illegal mining activities. The sites, located in remote areas of the Ashanti Region, were reportedly abandoned by the miners as the taskforce approached.

Speaking on the operation, a member of the taskforce described the galamsey operators as “very aggressive” and noted that they had been causing significant environmental damage. “The destruction caused by these illegal miners is devastating, and we will continue to crack down on them,” the official said.

The Ashanti Region has been a hotspot for galamsey activities, with many communities affected by the environmental degradation. The NAIMOS Taskforce has been stepping up efforts to combat the menace, with several operations conducted in recent months.

Galamsey has been a major concern in Ghana, with many calling for stricter enforcement of laws and regulations to curb the practice. The government has vowed to tackle the issue, with the NAIMOS Taskforce leading the charge.

The latest operation is expected to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders, as the government continues to crack down on illegal mining activities.
