Opposition Parties Unite to Challenge Ramaphosa’s Leadership

South Africa’s political landscape is bracing for a tumultuous period as the uMkhonto weSizwe Party and the African Transformation Movement have filed motions of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa. According to #eNCA, the parties are citing concerns over Ramaphosa’s handling of the Phala Phala scandal and alleged constitutional violations.
The motions, submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, request an urgent special sitting of Parliament to debate and vote on the matter within two weeks. The parties argue that Ramaphosa’s continued tenure is detrimental to the credibility and integrity of the Office of the President.
Dr. John Hlophe, leader of the MK Party, stated that the motion is aimed at restoring the country’s constitutional democracy and holding the president accountable for his actions. The ATM’s leader, Vuyo Zungula, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Ramaphosa’s presidency has eroded public trust.
The development comes after the Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament acted unlawfully in blocking an impeachment inquiry into Ramaphosa’s conduct over the Phala Phala scandal. The court has directed Parliament to reconsider the matter, paving the way for potential impeachment proceedings.
The outcome of the no-confidence vote remains uncertain, with the ANC and DA likely to rally behind Ramaphosa. However, the move is expected to intensify pressure on the president and test the stability of the Government of National Unity.
