The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is set to increase its production capacity to 45,000 barrels per stream day, up from the current 28,000 barrels, after completing major maintenance works. This upgrade is expected to enhance Ghana’s energy security and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products .

New Furnace Installation

A new furnace, F-61, has been installed and is expected to be commissioned soon, enabling the refinery to reach its original nameplate capacity. Plans are also underway to expand capacity further to 60,000 barrels per stream day in the medium term .

Government Support

The government has played a crucial role in the refinery’s revival, with President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, providing leadership and oversight. TOR has expressed gratitude for their support .

Impact on Ghana’s Economy

The refinery’s restart is expected to save Ghana around $400 million monthly in import costs, boosting the economy and stabilizing fuel supply. This development aligns with Ghana’s efforts to strengthen domestic energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on imports.
