Parliament has condemned the continued detention of Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and called for his immediate release. In a release issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director, Media Relations on 3rd October, 2026, Parliament described the prolonged custody after voluntary surrender as troubling and inconsistent with constitutional protections for Members of Parliament.

The legislature noted that the Manhyia South MP turned himself in after the High Court cleared EOCO to effect his arrest over alleged financial irregularities at SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. Parliament argued that his law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, which legally represented the company, had already cooperated with EOCO on three occasions in March and April 2026 through lawful representatives.

According to the release dated 3rd October, 2026, EOCO’s original invitation dated 10th February 2026 was addressed to the Senior Partner and was duly referred to the Clerk to Parliament on 18th February 2026, with compliance on 4th March, 18th March and 30th April 2026. Parliament stressed that the attempted arrest at the High Court Complex on September 23, shortly after the MP appeared as counsel for Ghana Jollof client Salomey Awiti Bafourh, had already raised concerns about procedural fairness and attracted criticism from the Ghana Bar Association.

Parliament stated that the continued detention after voluntary surrender undermines the rule of law and creates a dangerous precedent for sitting MPs. The statement cautioned that disregard for established protocols for inviting and detaining Members of Parliament erodes Ghana’s democratic credentials and could damage its international reputation for respecting the separation of powers.

Parliament has therefore called for the immediate release of Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah from EOCO custody and urged EOCO led by Executive Director Raymond Archer to follow constitutional procedures when dealing with Members of Parliament. The release signed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director, Media Relations on 3rd October, 2026 emphasized that while Parliament supports accountability, it will not countenance actions that undermine legislative independence.

EOCO is yet to issue an official response to Parliament’s condemnation dated 3rd October as public interest intensifies over the detention of the Manhyia South lawmaker and its broader implications for parliamentary privilege in Ghana.
