
The legislature noted that the Manhyia South MP turned himself in after the High Court cleared EOCO to effect his arrest over alleged financial irregularities at SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited. Parliament argued that his law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, which legally represented the company, had already cooperated with EOCO on three occasions in March and April 2026 through lawful representatives.
Parliament stated that the continued detention after voluntary surrender undermines the rule of law and creates a dangerous precedent for sitting MPs. The statement cautioned that disregard for established protocols for inviting and detaining Members of Parliament erodes Ghana’s democratic credentials and could damage its international reputation for respecting the separation of powers.
EOCO is yet to issue an official response to Parliament’s condemnation dated 3rd October as public interest intensifies over the detention of the Manhyia South lawmaker and its broader implications for parliamentary privilege in Ghana.
