Ghanaian Evacuee Dies On Arrival From South Africa

A Ghanaian evacuee repatriated from South Africa died shortly after landing at Accra International Airport on Friday evening, prompting immediate medical intervention and official condolences from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The individual was among a group of Ghanaians who arrived aboard an Air Tanzania flight. According to eyewitness accounts from fellow passengers, the evacuee’s condition began to deteriorate mid-flight, approximately half an hour before touchdown. An emergency medical team stationed at the airport’s Emergency Medical Reception responded upon arrival.

The Ministry confirmed the fatality in a formal statement. According to @moigovgh official release, the person was pronounced dead at the reception facility shortly after the aircraft docked. The Ministry said it is undertaking the necessary protocols to notify the family and provide consular support.

Officials had arranged standby medical personnel as part of standard repatriation procedures for vulnerable returnees. Despite prompt resuscitation efforts, the team was unable to stabilize the passenger. The incident has cast a somber tone over what was intended as a humanitarian evacuation.

Repatriations from South Africa have increased in recent months amid diplomatic coordination to assist Ghanaian nationals facing economic hardship and social instability. Such operations typically involve pre-flight health screening, in-flight monitoring, and post-arrival medical triage. The death highlights the precarious health status of some evacuees and the critical importance of robust contingency planning during transit.

With notification processes underway, attention now turns to support for the bereaved family and a review of medical protocols for future evacuations. For the Ministry, the priority will be ensuring dignity in repatriation while safeguarding the wellbeing of returnees who arrive in fragile condition.
