The Power of Prophecy
“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.” — 1
Corinthians 14:1 ESV
God still speaks. Prophecy is one of the ways He does it — God’s heart, spoken through a yielded person, to build, encourage, and comfort others. “On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation” — 1 Corinthians 14:3 ESV.
The power of prophecy is not in drama or in predicting the future. Its power is in bringing God’s present word to a present situation. It shines light in darkness. It gives direction when we are confused. It strengthens faith when we are weary. And it always points us back to Jesus. “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” — Revelation 19:10 ESV.
Prophecy must be rooted in love and handled with responsibility. “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said” — 1 Corinthians 14:29 ESV. It is not to control people, but to serve them. It must line up with Scripture, bear good fruit, and bring peace, not confusion.
We cannot prophesy in our own strength. We need the infilling of the Holy Spirit. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” — Acts 1:8 ESV.
The Spirit gives the word, the timing, and the wisdom to deliver it with grace. As you are filled with the Spirit, ask Him to open your ears to hear and your mouth to speak what He is saying.
Desire this gift. Pursue love first. Then ask God to use you to speak life to someone today. Your
obedience could be the word that turns a life around.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that You still speak. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me ears to hear You. Purify
my motives and help me to prophesy for the upbuilding of Your people. Let every word I speak be from You and bring glory to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
