Petrol Eases While Diesel Climbs In Fuel Review

Ghanaian motorists will experience divergent pump prices from today 17th August, 2016 as petrol costs decline and diesel becomes more expensive, reflecting volatile international benchmarks and currency movements.
Industry data show petrol could fall by up to two point nine percent to an indicative GH¢15.82 per litre. Diesel is projected to rise by one point three nine percent to about GH¢17.73 per litre. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is also expected to dip marginally to roughly GH¢16.21 per kilogram.
The mixed trajectory is largely attributed to developments on the global market. According to @joybusiness market assessment, crude oil prices gained amid geopolitical risks around the Strait of Hormuz, while refined products diverged with diesel advancing and petrol and LPG retreating. The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies noted that the spread underscores uncertainty in supply chains and pricing transmission.
Consumer advocates however caution that indicative changes may not immediately translate at the pumps. The Chief Executive of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers told JOYBUSINESS that most Oil Marketing Companies are likely to hold prices steady, leveraging flexibility within the regulatory framework. With over two hundred OMCs operating nationally, competitive dynamics often delay or dilute price pass-through.
The National Petroleum Authority has also adjusted price floors for the current window. Petrol and diesel floors were lowered, with diesel recording the steeper reduction, while LPG saw a modest cut. The NPA has reminded marketers not to trade below the approved minima. Officials further highlighted recent cedi appreciation as a potential stabilizer, suggesting that sustained forex strength could facilitate further reductions in subsequent pricing cycles.
For households and businesses, the review presents a balancing act. Relief on petrol may ease commuting costs, but higher diesel risks feeding into transport and food inflation. The coming weeks will test whether currency gains and government-industry interventions can sufficiently cushion consumers against external shocks.
