NPP Condemns Imprisonment of Camilla Alhassan
The opposition New Patriotic Party NPP, has strongly criticized the conviction and one-year prison sentence imposed on Camilla Alhassan by an Accra Circuit Court, describing the development as a serious setback for constitutional freedoms and democratic governance in Ghana.
In a statement signed by The Party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua on Thursday, the party expressed what it described as “deep shock and profound concern” over the court’s decision, arguing that the imprisonment of a citizen for comments made online about President John Dramani Mahama raises important constitutional questions regarding freedom of expression.
According to the NPP, the case extends beyond the conviction of one individual and touches on the broader protection of civil liberties guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution. The party maintained that while freedom of expression is not without limits, criminal sanctions for speech could have a chilling effect on public discourse and democratic participation.
The NPP further argued that allegations of defamation should ordinarily be resolved through civil legal processes rather than criminal prosecution. It contended that Ghana’s legal system already provides established mechanisms through which individuals, including the President, can seek redress if they believe their reputations have been damaged. “If the president feels defamed, the constitution points him to a court room not a prison cell” the statement read.
The party also criticized what it described as the increasing use of state institutions including law enforcement agencies and the courts to suppress dissenting voices. It warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could discourage citizens from expressing opinions on matters of national interest and weaken public confidence in democratic governance.
The NPP called on all stakeholders to safeguard the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. The party urged authorities to ensure that the rule of law is applied in a manner that protects both individual rights and democratic accountability.
The New Patriotic Party resolved to support any lawful effort to pursue an immediate appeal against the said conviction and sentence. “We stand firmly with Madam Alhasan and her legal team and remain committed to ensuring that every available legal remedy is pursued until justice is done” the NPP said in it’s statement declaring strong and unwavering support for Camila.
The statement also urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in defending constitutional freedoms, insisting that democracy thrives when citizens are able to express their views without fear of intimidation or undue punishment.
