Ghana, Burkina Faso sign defence pact to secure trade corridors

Ghana and Burkina Faso have signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement aimed at strengthening security along vital cross-border trade corridors and protecting the movement of goods and people between the two countries. The agreement, signed on Monday, August 10, 2026 according to the Ministry of Defence, is expected to provide a framework for security and escort support along strategic trade routes, with the broader objective of safeguarding economic activity and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of critical supplies.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the pact was signed by Ghana’s Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, and Burkina Faso’s Minister of State and Minister of War and Patriotic Defence, Major General Célestin Simporé. The agreement comes against the backdrop of the importance of secure transport corridors to the economies of both countries, particularly routes that facilitate the movement of goods and essential supplies across their shared frontier.

Under the cooperation, Ghana and Burkina Faso will work more closely to strengthen security arrangements along identified cross-border corridors, including the provision of escort support where required.bThe arrangement is intended to reduce security vulnerabilities along the routes and create a safer environment for commercial transport and other legitimate cross-border activities.

The Ministry of Defence said the cooperation is also designed to safeguard economic stability, secure critical supply routes and deepen bilateral defence relations between Ghana and Burkina Faso. The agreement therefore extends beyond immediate security considerations, linking defence cooperation directly to trade and economic resilience. Secure transport routes are critical to maintaining the regular supply of goods, supporting businesses and sustaining cross-border commerce between the two neighbouring countries.

The signing also signals a strengthening of institutional cooperation between the Ghana Armed Forces and Burkina Faso’s defence authorities, particularly in addressing security challenges that can affect movement and commerce across their respective territories. The ceremony was witnessed by Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief Director of the Ministry of Defence, Emmanuel Kartey; and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong.

Also present were directors of the Ministry of Defence, heads of various directorates of the Ghana Armed Forces and members of the Burkinabè delegation. The latest agreement is expected to provide a structured basis for continued engagement between the two countries on the protection of strategic corridors and other areas of shared defence interest.

By combining security measures with closer bilateral coordination, Ghana and Burkina Faso seek to strengthen confidence in cross-border transportation while protecting the economic lifelines that connect the two countries.
