NDC Ponders Next Move as Supreme Court Upholds Nyindam’s Win

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is weighing its next legal move after the Supreme Court quashed a High Court judgement that had annulled the election of New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Matthew Nyindam as Member of Parliament for Kpandai. The apex court’s decision has been hailed as a victory for justice by the NPP.

According to reports on JoyNews, the Supreme Court ruled in a 4-1 majority decision that the Tamale High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the election petition filed by the NDC’s Daniel Nsala Wakpal, as it was presented outside the mandatory statutory time limit. This decision effectively upholds Nyindam’s election as the duly elected MP for Kpandai.

Speaking after the ruling, Nyindam expressed gratitude to the judiciary, his legal team, and supporters, saying the decision had reaffirmed the will of the people of Kpandai. “I want to thank the Almighty God for what he’s done in my life, and to also thank my lawyers and the Supreme Court judges for the ruling,” he said.

The NDC, however, is not conceding defeat, with Majority Chief Whip Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor stating that the party is “grieved” by the outcome and will advise its candidate on the next steps. “This matter is not the end. The ruling of the court will be filed according to the court’s own decision by February 6. When we obtain the certified true copy and study it, we will advise ourselves. There is a review option, so this matter is not the end,” he said.

The Supreme Court’s decision has brought relief to Nyindam and his supporters, ending months of uncertainty over the Kpandai parliamentary seat. The Electoral Commission had initially scheduled a rerun for December 31, 2025, but this has now been halted.

The NPP has welcomed the decision as a victory for justice, with Director of Legal Affairs Gary Nimako Marfo describing it as “clear, emphatic and final”.
