Hearts of Oak Withdraw from GHALCA Top-4

Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club PLC has withdrawn from the 2026 Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top-4 Tournament, citing a clash between the competition’s scheduled dates and preparations for the new league season. The club announced the decision in an official release dated August 11, 2026, explaining that participation in the tournament at this time would create challenges for its preparations and commitments ahead of the upcoming campaign.

According to Hearts of Oak, the withdrawal followed careful consideration of its existing programme and the timing of the GHALCA competition. The club said the tournament dates conflict with other agreed programmes, particularly the commencement of the new league season, making it difficult for the team to participate without disrupting its preparations. “The decision has been taken due to clashes between the scheduled dates of the tournament and other pre-agreed programmes of the Club,” Hearts of Oak stated.

The club added that, given the circumstances, taking part in the Top-4 competition would present challenges to its existing preparations and commitments. Hearts of Oak also disclosed that it had previously engaged the Ghana League Clubs Association over the scheduling of the tournament. The Phobians said they had requested a change of date to enable the club to participate, but the discussions did not result in a revised schedule. “The Club had earlier made efforts to engage the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) with a request for a change of date in order to enable Hearts of Oak to participate. Unfortunately, those efforts did not materialize into a change of schedule,” the statement read.

Following the unsuccessful attempt to secure a change in the programme, the club said it concluded that withdrawing from the tournament was the most appropriate option. The decision means Hearts of Oak will not feature in the 2026 edition of the GHALCA Top-4 Tournament, as the club prioritises its preparations for the new league season and other existing commitments. Despite its withdrawal, the Accra-based club sought to maintain cordial relations with GHALCA and the wider football community.

Hearts of Oak expressed appreciation to GHALCA for its efforts in organising the tournament and wished the association and the participating clubs a successful competition. “The Club remains committed to maintaining its cordial relationship and continued collaboration with GHALCA and the wider Ghana football community,” it added. The withdrawal represents a significant change to the composition of the 2026 Top-4 competition, particularly given Hearts of Oak’s stature and longstanding involvement in Ghanaian football. The club, however, maintained that its decision was driven by scheduling considerations rather than any breakdown in its relationship with GHALCA.
