Police Nab Suspect with 713 Slabs of Suspected Narcotics

 

 

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect, Atampugri Akanyani, for unlawful possession of large quantities of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region. According to reports, Akanyani was driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 when he was intercepted by a police snap check team at the Asanso checkpoint on January 26, 2026.

 

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, totaling 713 compressed slabs. The suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with GH¢150,000, which was declined.

 

“The Ashanti South Region remains a no-go area for criminal activities,” said DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, warning others involved in the transportation and distribution of narcotics.

 

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations as efforts continue to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence.

 

The police command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related crimes, urging the public to support law enforcement efforts.
