Ken Ofori-Atta's US Detention: Ghana Govt Moves to Extradite Ex-Finance Minister

Ghana’s Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will be arrested upon his return to Ghana. According to JoyNews, Ofori-Atta is currently detained in the US, where he was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on January 6, 2026, over concerns related to his immigration status.
Justice Srem Sai stated that the Ghanaian government is working with US authorities to extradite Ofori-Atta, who is wanted in Ghana for alleged financial misconduct. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had previously declared Ofori-Atta wanted, and investigations are ongoing.
According to TV3’s The Key Points programme, Ofori-Atta’s US visa was revoked in June 2025, and he has been living in the US without a valid visa. His lawyers claim he has a pending petition for adjustment of status, which allows him to stay in the US legally.
The Ghanaian government is coordinating extradition efforts with foreign governments, and Ofori-Atta will face arrest, caution, and formal charges upon his return to Ghana. The case has sparked intense public interest, with many calling for accountability.
Ofori-Atta served as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under President Nana Akufo-Addo and is facing 78 counts related to alleged corruption, including the SML Deal and National Cathedral project.
