Customs Foils GH¢85m Tax Evasion Bid*q

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted 12 articulated trucks carrying edible cooking oil, tomato paste, and spaghetti along the Dawhenya–Tema Road, with taxes at stake exceeding GH¢85 million. The operation was carried out in a joint effort with the National Security Revenue Mobilisation Taskforce.
According to Joy News, the trucks were part of a consignment of 18 vehicles electronically gated out of the Customs system as transit goods destined for Niger. However, they were intercepted without the mandatory Customs human escort, breaching Ghana’s transit procedures.
The Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has commended the Customs Division of the GRA for the operation. “We take these things seriously because the impact on our revenue is serious,” Ampem stressed, directing the Commissioner-General to conclude investigations within one week.
GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong warned businesses to comply with Customs laws, threatening to apply the full rigours of the law against offenders. The authority is tracking six outstanding trucks and two Customs officers involved.
The intercepted goods and trucks are under strict Customs supervision, pending further action. The GRA’s crackdown on revenue leakages underscores the government’s resolve to protect state revenue.
The operation highlights the GRA’s commitment to combating tax evasion and ensuring compliance with Customs regulations.
