Uganda’s Post-Election Crisis Deepens

Uganda's Post-Election Crisis Deepens as Army Chief Threatens Opposition Leader

Tensions in Uganda have reached a boiling point after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the army chief and son of President Yoweri Museveni, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to opposition leader Bobi Wine, demanding he surrender to police. The dramatic threat, posted on social media, has sparked fears of a violent crackdown on the opposition.

According to Reuters, Kainerugaba claimed security forces had killed 22 supporters of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party, describing them as “terrorists”. In a separate post, he warned Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, that he would be treated as an “outlaw or rebel” if he failed to surrender. The police, however, distanced themselves from the ultimatum, stating Wine was not being sought by law enforcement.

The standoff comes after Museveni was declared the winner of last week’s election with 71.6% of the vote, securing an eighth term in office. Wine, who placed second with 24%, has alleged widespread electoral fraud and is currently in hiding, claiming his life is in danger.

The election has been widely criticized by observers and rights groups, with the United Nations expressing concerns over “widespread repression and intimidation”. The situation is reminiscent of Uganda’s history of post-election violence, with several incidents reported in recent days, including the killing of opposition supporters by police.

As the country holds its breath, Wine’s fate hangs in the balance. The international community watches closely, with fears growing of a full-blown crisis in Uganda.

The situation highlights the deep-seated tensions in Uganda’s politics, with Museveni’s long rule facing increasing opposition from Wine’s youthful movement.
