Digital Shift: Ghana Drones Physical Driving Licences

Ghana is set to revolutionize its road traffic regulations, making it optional for drivers to carry physical driving licences. According to #KasapaFM, Chief Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), announced that drivers will soon be able to access their licence information digitally.

The new system, part of the government’s efforts to enhance transparency and compliance, will utilize a digital platform where drivers can access their licence details using their licence number. “You don’t need to carry the licence. You only have to remember your number,” Chief Supt. Obeng stated.

The MTTD is working to implement a new digital traffic enforcement system, Trafitec GH, which will enable police to detect traffic violations and issue electronic notices. Drivers will have 14 days to pay fines online through the (link unavailable) platform.

This move is expected to reduce direct interactions between motorists and police officers, minimizing opportunities for corruption. The existing traffic law, Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (LI 2180), is set to be repealed and replaced with the Road Traffic Regulations 2026.

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ministry of Transport, is advancing legislative reforms to support automated traffic enforcement.
