Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed strong reservations about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, warning that re-electing him would be disastrous for the party. According to JoyNews, Frimpong-Boateng questioned Bawumia’s emotional attachment to the NPP, citing initial opposition from prominent party figures, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, when Bawumia was chosen as Nana Akufo-Addo’s running mate.

Frimpong-Boateng criticized Bawumia’s performance as Vice President, stating that despite being touted as an economic “wizkid,” he has failed to meet expectations. He also alleged that the process leading to Bawumia’s selection as NPP flagbearer was marred by pressure and manipulation of delegates.

The former minister’s comments come amid speculation about the NPP’s future leadership, with some supporters backing Bawumia for the 2028 elections. However, others, including Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, are also considering contesting the flagbearer position.

Frimpong-Boateng emphasized the need for the NPP to prioritize party organization and grassroots participation over presidential ambitions. He warned that electing a flagbearer before rebuilding party structures would lead to favoritism and internal strife.

According to MyJoyOnline, other NPP bigwigs, including Boakye Agyarko and Patrick Yaw Boamah, have also expressed concerns about the proposed top-down approach to selecting a flagbearer, describing it as “strategically unsound” and “organizationally reckless”.
