Ablakwa to Visit Latvia Over Student’s Suspicious Death
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is set to lead a delegation to Latvia to push for answers in the death of 18-year-old Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia. Nana, a first-year Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, died on June 4, 2025, under mysterious circumstances. Latvian authorities claim he fell from the sixth floor of his apartment, but his family disputes this, citing a disturbing voice note Nana sent days before his death, alleging poisoning.
The Case Against Latvian Authorities
Nana’s family believes he was a victim of racism and foul play. They point to inconsistencies in the official report, including bruises on his body and no broken bones, contradicting the alleged fall. The family has demanded an independent investigation, and Ghana’s government is taking steps to ensure justice.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway
Minister Ablakwa’s visit aims to engage Latvian authorities and push for a thorough probe. A fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany has already submitted a preliminary report, and the Minister will meet with Latvian officials to discuss the case.
