Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Hon Mahama Ayariga, Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo and Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon Michael Allotey have arrived at the IRECOP Management Centre in Jamestown for the commissioning of the waste evacuation exercise from Agbogbloshie to the Adepa Landfill Site at Nsawam.

The exercise is aimed at evacuating the accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie as part of urgent efforts to improve sanitation and waste management in Accra, with heavy duty trucks, compactors and loaders deployed to clear years of refuse that blocks drains and threatens public health around Old Fadama.
According to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the operation will ensure daily lifting of waste to the engineered Adepa Landfill at Nsawam while the IRECOP facility at Jamestown supports sorting, recycling and composting. Officials said the project is being executed with Zoomlion Ghana Limited and private waste contractors under strict environmental monitoring.

In Ghana, solid waste management is governed by the Local Government Act 2016 and regulated by the Environmental Protection Authority. Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies are responsible for collection and disposal while the Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant model converts 80 percent of municipal waste into reusable products. The Adepa Landfill at Nsawam is a sanitary engineered landfill with leachate treatment and gas flaring built to replace open dumps.
Agbogbloshie has long battled indiscriminate dumping from households, market waste and e waste burning, leading to flooding and cholera risks in Korle Lagoon catchment areas. Government says the current evacuation forms part of a Greater Accra sanitation reset including market decongestion, drain desilting and enforcement against illegal dumping. Residents have been urged to use approved bins.
