Tema: Mahama Inaugurates Zonda Tech Phase 3 Plant

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated Phase 3 of the Zonda Tech Ghana automotive manufacturing enclave in Tema, unveiling expanded assembly lines designed to deepen local vehicle production and anchor Ghana industrial transformation under the 24 Hour Economy policy.

The commissioning in the industrial city marks a strategic escalation in domestic auto manufacturing, with new capacity to produce electric vehicles, broaden employment and stimulate downstream supplier ecosystems. The facility integrates fabrication, assembly and quality assurance floors built to meet international standards while positioning Tema as a West African automotive hub.

President Mahama declared that opportunities are created for businesses to thrive, emphasizing that the 24 Hour Economy is not just a slogan. It is taking place factory by factory, factory floor by factory floor. He stated that government is committed to working with firms to expand the industry and make mobility more affordable to Ghanaians, noting that hire purchase is the way to go for workers in the private sector seeking vehicle ownership.

The President underscored a green transition pivot, stating that government wants to promote solar charging because the sun is free, clarifying that the state does not want to promote only EV charging that strains the grid. According to President Mahama, the responsible Ministry will take a transparent policy for Cabinet to consider for all those entering the EV charging space so they do not imbalance the transformers serving those charging stations, a move to protect distribution stability.

Under Ghana automotive development policy, assemblers are required to progressively increase local content, comply with Energy Commission safety standards for electric vehicles, and partner with financial institutions to offer hire purchase schemes. This evergreen framework ensures that vehicle affordability is not left to market speculation but structured through regulated credit, insurance and after sales support, creating sustained demand beyond one-off commissioning events.

The Tema Phase 3 expansion is projected to generate hundreds of direct jobs operating three shifts, reduce import dependency and attract component manufacturers producing batteries, tyres and wiring harnesses locally. Industry analysts view the project as proof that the 24 Hour Economy is operationalizing factory by factory, with solar powered charging infrastructure expected to lower operating costs for commercial drivers while shielding households from transformer overloads linked to fast charging installations.
