Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that Ghana will formally apply to join BRICS as part of efforts to diversify the country’s international partnerships and expand economic opportunities. The announcement was made on Wednesday, signaling a major shift in Ghana’s foreign policy direction under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

According to Ablakwa, joining BRICS – the bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa with new members including Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran and UAE – will open new trade, investment and development financing avenues for Ghana beyond traditional Western partners. He said Ghana seeks to leverage BRICS’ New Development Bank, increased South-South trade and alternative payment systems to boost industrialization and infrastructure.

Ablakwa explained that the application aligns with Ghana’s reset agenda to pursue a more multipolar foreign policy, attract diverse investors and reduce over-reliance on IMF and Western capital markets. He noted that BRICS membership would give Ghana access to cheaper development finance, technology transfer and bigger markets for cocoa, gold and value-added products. The Foreign Minister stressed that Ghana remains committed to ECOWAS, AU and UN partnerships while exploring BRICS.

The move has sparked debate among economists and diplomats, with supporters saying BRICS offers Ghana bargaining power and infrastructure funding without strict conditionalities, while critics caution about geopolitical balancing. Government sources say a formal application letter will be submitted to the BRICS presidency after Cabinet approval, with Ghana eyeing observer status first before full membership.

Foreign Affairs Ministry officials say Ghana’s BRICS bid will be pursued alongside ongoing IMF PCI programme and World Bank partnerships, not as a replacement. The Ministry believes BRICS New Development Bank could fund roads, railways and energy projects that commercial lenders avoid. President Mahama has previously called for UN Security Council reform and fairer global financial architecture, aligning with BRICS rhetoric on equity.
