President John Dramani Mahama has declared that Africa deserves a permanent seat with veto power on the United Nations Security Council. He made the call at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
Mahama said the current Security Council structure is outdated and unjust. He argued that Africa with 54 member states and 1.4 billion people cannot remain a bystander in decisions on global peace and security.
According to President Mahama, true multilateralism must include Africa at the highest decision-making table with full veto rights. He said peace is impossible without fairness and representation.
He aligned Ghana’s position with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration which demand at least 2 permanent seats with veto power for Africa. The President said reform of the UN cannot wait any longer.
The Security Council currently has 5 permanent members with veto power including the United States, Russia, China, France and United Kingdom. Africa’s call for reform has grown louder as conflicts in the Sahel, Sudan and Horn of Africa dominate the Council agenda.
President Mahama stressed that Ghana will continue to champion dialogue, peacekeeping and African unity. He urged world leaders to commit to a more equitable global order that gives Africa voice, power and respect.
