The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), NaCCA and Ulster University, is working to integrate fire safety education into Ghana’s basic school curriculum to equip children with essential fire prevention and emergency response skills from an early age. The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday, aims to make fire safety a core life skill for every Ghanaian child from kindergarten to junior high school.

Under the proposed partnership, NaCCA will lead curriculum design to embed practical fire safety modules, including causes of domestic fires, safe use of gas and electrical appliances, evacuation procedures and how to call for help. GES will oversee teacher training and rollout across public and private basic schools, while GNFS will provide technical expertise, learning materials and demonstration equipment to ensure children learn by doing.

Officials from Ulster University in the United Kingdom are supporting the programme with international best practices in child-centred fire safety education, research and monitoring. The collaboration will include development of age-appropriate textbooks, animated videos and interactive drills tailored to Ghanaian homes and schools, where open fires, gas leaks and electrical faults remain major causes of fire outbreaks.

The GNFS says integrating fire safety at basic level will reduce fire incidents, save lives and build a generation that is safety-conscious. The Service noted that many domestic fires in Ghana result from lack of early education, and that teaching children prevention and emergency response from early age is more effective than adult sensitization alone after disasters occur.

GES and NaCCA have welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely as Ghana strengthens its standards-based curriculum with practical life skills. Stakeholders believe the partnership with Ulster University will ensure global standards while adapting content to local realities like market fires, bushfires and home gas explosions. Pilot training for teachers is expected to begin this academic year.
