Kagame Questions Why Africa Lags In Artificial Intelligence Race
President Paul Kagame says Africa must stop treating second place as its destiny in the global technology race.
Speaking in Kigali on Saturday, August 30, 2026, the Rwandan leader challenged the widespread assumption that the continent will always be a follower when it comes to emerging technologies.
President Kagame said it has become a given that Africa must lag behind everybody else, a notion he described as unacceptable. According to him, Africa has the knowledge, the skills and the people required to be a builder and not just a user of Artificial Intelligence.
He stressed that the continent’s role should no longer be limited to consuming AI products developed elsewhere. He said Africa must take an active part in building, shaping and leading the future of the technology.
For him, the question on Saturday was not about whether Africa can compete, but why the continent has accepted falling behind.
